Beyond the northern winds region lays Hyperborea, an immersive geometrical land where generative processes carve freely forms adjusted by wind dynamics, structuring a mythological engagable polys.

Thus begin ideas for a new work, Hyperborea, being developped since late summer 2012 at s373.net/x studios. A generative engagable environment driven by wind dynamics and game logics. Built as a commission for ICST's immersive device as well as other immersive surfaces in development.

In december 2012 André Sier did the first of two residencies at ICST, from ZHDK, where a specific version of Hyperborea for ICST's Immersive Space began prototyping. The immersive device will hold pieces by Jasch, Marcus Maeder, Daniel Bisig/Philippe Kocher, Edgar Barroso and André Sier. And will be expected to tour in Switzerland after summer 2013. A version of Hyperborea for other immersive and networked devices will also tour Portugal around the same time.

The ICST ISS device features 4 curved interactive panels and 16 sound points spacialized in two circles of 8 on the outside of the inner immersive interactive cylinder. During the residency, several image and sound tests were coded, while setting up and solving hardware of the immersive space. The sound spatialization engine is related to the avatar's position in 3d space, enveloping sounds located in 3d space, using dbap (distance based amplitude panning) on top of the sound synthesis generators. The image is either streched across all 4 panels in a single viewpoint, or each panel views one cardinal orientation from the avatar's position.

The piece is being built to be an immersive game-like experience, where the viewer drives its avatar through the game space, whilst experiencing the spatialized composition of elements scattered across several dificulty levels into reaching Hyperborea.

In this videos you can see a very early prototype testing, done fully in openframeworks/c++, where the image is mapped to fill the cylinder and the sound spatialized in 16 speakers at the device. The piece will be in production and developed further in two upcoming residencies, one at ICST, another at Espaço do Tempo. ICST also has a 3d printer which is very nice for clustering spaces with cellular automata. 3D printing ubiquitousness.
